Pay-Per-View (PPV) Advertising Worth It?
Last night I attended a webinar about PPV advertising and picked up some interesting insight on PPV. I didn’t like PPV before the webinar and still don’t like it, but if it helps generate income I’ll pretend to like it. You can download the webinar from last night off of Jonathan Volk’s site, it was quite informative.
Remember those pesky websites asking you to download and install a tool bar before you can access their content? Well that’s what PPV ads are all about. In exchange for access to that content you must view their ads. Those tool bars don’t contain spyware but they do have adware. Those are two different things, adware isn’t harmful but it is annoying. I’ve never installed one of those tool bars before and probably never will, I rather forgo the content and be ad-free.
Anyway, PPV seems to be restricted to a certain demographic depending on the genre of the tool bar. I will use the example from the webinar, Traffic Vance. They offer a tool bar that allows you to play games, so it’s safe to assume that most of these viewers fall under the demographics of gamers. Let’s take a look at those stats:
- The average age of a gamer is currently 33 years old.
- The average number of years an adult gamer has been playing is 12.
- 53% of adult gamers expect to play as much as, or more than they do now, in a decade’s time.
- 69% of heads of households in the U.S. play computer and video games.
- Men play games for slightly longer than women over the course of a week, with 7.6 hours and 7.4 hours respectively.
- Of the most frequent gamers, 44% play games online.
- 58% of online game players are male, 42% female.
According to these stats, we are targeting quite an even number of male/female and at an age of young working parents. That’s pretty good actually, there are a broad range of products that can be marketed to this demographic. PPV isn’t as popular as PPC yet, so the prices are quite low. Generally less than a penny per view. Unfortunately, at the current stage of PPV there isn’t much you can do to target your audience like PPC. PPV is definitely worth checking out though!
