Massive Linking Power of Wiki
I came across several products that claim to boost page rank with Wikipedia links. Then I thought to myself, aren’t all links on Wikipedia ‘nofollow’ links? A ‘nofollow’ link informs some search engines that the link should not influence search engine ranking. Unless those products are teaching black hat methods, you aren’t walking down the free page rank boost aisle. Matt Cutts posted a video about ‘nofollow’ links and it certainly suggests that Wiki links won’t boost your search engine page ranking. However, I have read that if you’re a trusted editor on Wikipedia the ‘nofollow’ tags can be removed. Ding ding ding! So, those products were telling the truth. Yes, I admit it is possible, but the amount of work required to become a trusted editor is just silly.
You could take advantage of Wiki and get some traffic to your website, but it’s probably frowned upon. What you do is find phrases that doesn’t have a page yet and create one or append to an existing one. For example, you have a website about ‘ghosts’ and you go on Wikipedia and type in ‘ghosts’. If you can write some good relevant material about ‘ghosts’ and append to the Wiki page, great! Now put your website in the references and external links. Woila! However, a more effective way is to create a page that does not exist yet, and dominate that page. Say… the phrase ‘ghosts in my butt’? Ah ha! There’s no page for that yet. If you write a decent article about that topic and reference it to your website, you’ll be the only reference on that page and the only external link. I’ve seen a lot of statistics for this and Wiki sends a considerable amount of traffic to external websites. I also found that Wikipedia loves blogs. The moderators tend to delete blog links a lot less than other links. Alright, you owe me $49.99 for reading this paragraph since that’s about how much people charge to teach you this Wiki technique.
Another interesting thing about Wiki’s linking power is its internal links. I watched a video from SEOmoz and it demonstrated that you can use Wikipedia to ‘pwn’ your competition. We will use ‘ghosts’ again as an example. Say I searched the term ‘ghost’ on Google and your competitor’s result is first and the Wiki result is a few down. What you can do to knock him off the top is to create some internal links within that Wiki page. Append some related links to other Wiki pages about witches, demons, zombies, etc and BAM you just knocked him off the first spot because Google loves Wiki so much. So, don’t underestimate the power of your internal links. Oh by the way, this is a black hat method and should not be used. Besides, why would you want Wiki on the top anyway? That just slims your chances of being on top.
